Step 2: Consider what you want and what you need in a property.

Now that you have an idea of what you can afford, the time has come to figure out what you want. Your house search will be much more efficient if you consider ahead of time exactly what your expectations are for a new property. Some of the things you should think about include:

• Type of property – would you be more comfortable in a single-detached house (free-hold),condo, townhouse (strata)? Do you need/want a rental suite?
• What is your preferred location?
• Do you need a large yard? Are there pets to consider?
• How many square feet do you need?
• How many bedrooms/bathrooms do you want?
• What parking requirements do you have? Do you need a double-garage, RV parking etc?
• Do you have a preference for character homes, contemporary renovations, new builds?
