OLD CITY

The Old city is a classy area that makes up our downtown. It has many heritage buildings along with a good mix of storefronts and restaurants. Everything is in walking distance should you want to take a walk down the seawall or Maffeo Sutton Park. There is a good mix of older turn of the century homes, new and old condo developments as well as new builds popping up everywhere. It is a great area to develop with the city offering no D.C.C’s to encourage developers to build here. Some exciting new developments include but are not limited to the proposed fast foot passenger ferry to Vancouver, The Port Place Mall expansion, The Vancouver Island Conference center and the 21-storey, 240-room luxury hotel development which will be a landing pad for 70,000 tourists a year visiting Nanaimo. The proposed building will have a restaurant on the top floor overlooking Nanaimo Harbour, and be located directly next to the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. An overhead pedestrian walkway will connect it to the conference centre.
